November 20-21, 2017, Tennessee College of Applied Technology students, John Henley III in Computer Information Technology and John Melton IV in Industrial Maintenance attended the SkillsUSA Tennessee Leadership Training Institute (TLTI). They served as voting delegates for the 2017-2018 SkillsUSA state officers. While learning about state government and leadership skills, the students successfully completed the requirements for their Statesman Award Pin. The requirements also included an interview of an elected official when they returned to campus.

On November 27, the students had the opportunity to interview State Representative Paul Sherrell of the 43rd District which includes TCAT McMinnville. The students became advocates for post-secondary education and the state funding provided to students through the Wilder-Naifeh Grant, TN Promise Scholarship, and TN Reconnect Scholarship. They encouraged Representative Sherrell to continue to support these grants and scholarships for post-secondary education.
